Contribute to an abandoned Taninbar corella (Goffins cockatoo) with ongoing medical needs Help Nancy at Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden rise money to help this parrot. This adorable & intelligent little cockatoo was abandoned on Nancy’s doorstep on Jan. 25, 2014 around 3 PM. This parrot has been and remains in strict quarantine in the only room available (the bathroom) at Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden at 518 Elizabeth St., Key West, FL until it receives the medical treatment it needs and receives a clean bill of health. The parrot is a patient of Dr. Kristin at the Marathon Veterinary Hospital (60 miles north of Key West) where her overall condition (blood/fecal/sex/etc) was evaluated initially for approximately $600. This initial testing required a second testing ($250) for a suspected contagious disease. The results of the second tests indicate the need for treatment for bacterial psittacosis which can be transmitted to other birds and humans. Dr Kristin has been trying to locate a source of Injectable doxycycline which is hard to find at a reasonable price. This cockatoo needs to begin a series of 7 weekly shots ASAP after which she will be able to join our flocks indoor and outdoor activities. Being in isolation this long is hard on this parrot. Cockatoo's have complex social needs. This parrot arrived with no flight feathers and may be removing them itself. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the stress of this long confinement does not lead to more plucking.
Our parrots ride in our van nearly everyday. I can not use it because of possible transmissiom Fortunately I have been able to borrow a car for these hospital visits otherwise I would have to rent one. Thank you to Peter Whelan for the loan of his car.
The estimate for the total cost of her treatment is between $390 - $590, determined by the price of the medicine ($75 - $275). I should hear from Dr Kristin this week on the exact price.
June brings us very few walking visitors and summers are the slow months in Key West This online campaign is necessary at this time
I wish to thank all our winter walk in visitors who contributed to this parrots well being and provided the funds to get us this far. . Please help this Corella cockatoo come out of a five months quarantine. Thank you, Nancy.
